TO HIS COY MISTRESS

After some research and lots of rereading I finally got what this poem is trying to say. At the beginning of this poem a man is speaking to a shy woman and he states that if they had more time her “coyness” would be “no crime”. He says that is he had more time he would compliment every part of her until he reaches her heart which can be a metaphor for sex and love. He then says “BUT” we don’t have the time and that YOLO(you only live once). He tells her that if she doesn’t have sex with him the worms will take her virginity in her coffin. In my view this guy is getting kind of desperate. He then says that her sexual desire will “burn up in ashes” if she doesn’t give herself up to him.  Afterward he says “NOW” I have told you what will happen if you die, so she should have sex with him while she is young. Finally he calms down a little, and he admits that having sex doesn’t make the “sun” stop moving. By the end of this the girl he is telling this to is probably scared to death.  Nonetheless To His Coy Mistress offers us a chance to explore some of the speakers confusing thoughts.
